Competency Assessment Tool

Introduction

Detailed competency elements have been developed to inform the creation of this competency assessment tool.

The tool will be a valuable resource for intending applicants, with emphasis on progressive self-assessment of their likelihood to achieve certification. The competency assessment tool steps applicants through the detailed competency elements to assess their knowledge, skills and experience. The tool will assist intending applicants to identify which competencies may require further development and to assist in planning their future field experience and training needs, prior to submission of their application.

How to use the tool

To use the tool, simply rank your own level of competency across each of the six different areas. Each area is split into a number of different questions.

The ranking system used in the Tool is a 5 step ranking scale as follows (further definition is described below):

  1. No Awareness or experience
  2. Fundamental Awareness
  3. Novice
  4. Intermediate
  5. Advanced

Be honest in answering these questions, as they will assist in determining your readiness for applying for certification and support future professional development planning.

The report provided at the end of the self-assessment will provide a graphical summary of where your competency currently sits (as per your own responses to the questions).

The report, that can be downloaded and updated over time, will assist individuals to identify competencies that may require further development, and/or assist in planning their future field experience and training needs, prior to submission of their application. Scores will be ranked based on the following traffic light system.

Red

Competency level and knowledge is limited.
Candidates with competencies ranked in this section, who are intending to apply for Certification, are encouraged to consider the competency requirements for certification and undertake further education and experience prior to applying for certification.

Amber

Competency level is intermediate.
Candidates with competencies ranked in this section, who are intending to apply for Certification, are encouraged to carefully consider the competency requirements for certification and consider if they meet the characteristics, on a balance approach, of the levels required to attain Certification.

Green

Competency level may be suitable for Certification
Your self assessment indicates your competency levels may be suitable to proceed with the application process. If you have already completed the tool, you can login and view your previous results.

Please note this is a self assessment tool and is not designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of your skills, rather an indication based on an individuals self assessment.

  • You utilise the full range of reference and resource materials in this competency.
4Intermediate
(practical application)
You are able to successfully complete tasks in this competency as requested. Help from an expert may be required from time to time, but you can usually perform the skill independently.
  • Focus is on applying and enhancing knowledge or skill;

  • You have applied this competency to situations occasionally while needing minimal guidance to perform successfully;

  • You understand and can discuss the application and implications of changes to processes, policies, and procedures in this area.
5Advanced
(applied theory)
You can perform the actions associated with this skill without assistance. You are certainly recognized within your immediate organization as "a person to ask" when difficult questions arise regarding this skill.
  • Focus is on broad organizational/professional issues;

  • You have consistently provided practical/relevant ideas and perspectives on process or practice improvements which may easily be implemented;

  • You are capable of coaching others in the application of this competency by translating complex nuances relating to this competency into easy to understand terms;

  • You participate in senior level discussions regarding this competency;

  • You are capable in the development of reference and resource materials in this competency.
