Tips from model applications

Tips from model applications

Lessons learned from Assessment Round 1 & 2- model applications.

Additional advice to applicants post first assessment rounds.
Following the first assessment rounds a number of model applications were identified by assessors.
These model applications demonstrated and communicated suitable examples of personal competency
and leadership through a variety of different situations and projects within the context of the
competency statement responses were addressing.
The aim here is to add to the advice to applicants already available on the Site Contamination Prevention Australia application form
rather than replace it, based on presentation formats which provided the greatest clarity for assessors
reviewing applications.
Any questions regarding this information should be directed to the Site Contamination Prevention Australia Executive Officer.
With model applications presented to the assessors, the format below was deployed in addressing each
of the competency statements.

1. Competency statement (eg. The nature, causes and significance of site contamination)
Provide a paragraph overview statement for this competency- summarising relevant roles and
responsibilities in relation to this competency and the length of your experience with issues involving this
competency.

For example, I have acted as the principle project manager with Company X and Company Y over the last
five years and was responsible for assessing the nature, causes and significance of site contamination.
This includes assessing sites from (eg. different industries and land uses) and (types of contaminants)
within particular environmental settings (eg. residences and other land use).

This statement should be reflected in your cited professional experience statements.
When preparing your statements these should be arranged by specific examples. With each of these
examples you will need to clearly describe the actions and decisions made due to your influence and
personal efforts. This is a reflection of your personal competency. Include descriptions on how you
undertook the task and your rationale for the decisions made. These examples need to be kept within
the context of the competency elements, and where possible relate back to competency sub-elements.

Example 1:(Project X): Describe your role, position, duration and the scope of what you were
required to do within the context of the competency you are addressing, including documents prepared
by you. Describe the conditions, challenges and the decisions you made and why you made them. What
recommendations did you make based on the information available and what led you to make those
recommendations.

(Example)Project Broadfoot Meadows:
I was the lead project manager for undertaking a full site assessment for the Broadfoot Meadows Council over a five a month period.
The scope of the site assessment was (with the outcome of risk characterisation, due diligence, land use suitability, etc), and involved (types of contaminants) in various states (state & distribution of contaminants), characteristics of the site included (geology, topography, surface hydrology, groundwater, etc) as well as nearby (other considerations, surrounding area) with key receptor information (ie. human health, ecological, structural materials risks, etc.).
The key stakeholders I communicated with included (name the stakeholders you liaised with including any community engagement, and how you communicated with them etc).
The main problems/challenges with the site assessment (relate any problems, difficulties and what you did to address them).
I directed a number of assessments (type of assessment activities and processes taken) as I wanted to get a picture of (why were these tests/assessment undertaken) so as to address the client brief (what were the clients objectives for the assessment).
I found that (what were the results of the tests and assessments) and I recommended the following actions (what were your final recommendations for the site.)

You should aim for at least three examples for each competency. You may replicate your examples
within the context of each competency.

Existing instructions on the application form are equally relevant (details below).
